IPGlance FAQ

Answers with the technical context left in.

Understand why results change, how IP-based location works, what browser signals mean, and where a web-based check reaches its limits.

IP address and location

What is a public IP address?

A public IP address is the network address that internet services see when your connection reaches them. It usually represents your router, mobile carrier gateway, workplace, VPN server, or another shared network edge—not a unique device or person.

Why is the displayed location not my exact location?

IP location is an estimate based on network registration and routing databases. It may point to a nearby city, an internet provider hub, a corporate gateway, or a VPN endpoint. It is not GPS and should not be treated as a street-level position.

Why did my IP address change?

Many providers assign addresses dynamically. Reconnecting a router, switching networks, using mobile data, enabling a VPN, or moving between carrier gateways can produce a different public IP.

Can someone identify me from my IP address?

An IP address alone usually does not reveal a person’s name. Providers may hold account records, but websites generally see only the address and related network metadata. Shared connections also weaken identity assumptions.

How do VPNs and proxies affect the result?

They route traffic through another server. IPGlance will normally see that server’s public address and approximate location instead of the address assigned directly by your internet provider.

Browser and device signals

How does IPGlance know which browser I use?

Browsers send a user-agent string and expose feature information so websites can deliver compatible code. Modern browsers sometimes reduce or generalize these values to limit fingerprinting, so detection can be approximate.

Why can the device or operating system be wrong?

Compatibility modes, privacy protections, remote browsing, emulation, and reduced user-agent data can make a browser report a generic platform. IPGlance displays the best interpretation of the available signal, not a hardware inspection.

What do screen size and viewport size mean?

Screen size describes the display area reported by the browser. Viewport size is the space currently available to the webpage after browser controls, zoom, sidebars, and window size are considered. They are often different.

Why does the report change in another browser?

Each browser has its own settings, permissions, storage, extensions, privacy protections, and feature support. The same device can therefore produce different results in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, or a hardened browser.

Privacy and security

Does a “privacy signal” mean I am anonymous?

No. Signals such as Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track express a preference, but they do not hide your IP address or guarantee how every website responds. Anonymity depends on the full browsing and network context.

Is this a security scan?

No. IPGlance reports browser-visible features and network context. It does not scan device files, test passwords, inspect installed applications, or certify that a network or account is secure.

Can browser storage be detected without reading my data?

Yes. A site can test whether cookies or web storage features are available without displaying the private contents stored by unrelated websites. Browsers isolate site storage by origin.

Why does HTTPS matter?

HTTPS encrypts traffic between your browser and the website, reducing the risk of modification or interception in transit. It does not by itself prove that every claim on a website is trustworthy or that your device is secure.

Results and troubleshooting

Why is a result unavailable?

The browser may block a permission, an extension may filter a request, a network source may time out, or the signal may not exist on that platform. “Unavailable” is more accurate than replacing a missing value with a guess.

Why does a result change after refreshing?

Network routes, latency, connection type, viewport dimensions, and permission state can change between checks. Some data sources also update independently, so a refresh can reveal newer information.

How can I report an inaccurate result?

Use the Contact page and name the exact section, the value shown, what you expected, and whether a VPN, proxy, mobile network, browser extension, or private window was involved. Avoid sending sensitive personal information.

Can I use IPGlance to locate a lost device?

No. A browser-based IP lookup cannot track a lost device or provide precise real-time location. Use the official device-location service from the operating system provider and contact appropriate authorities if safety or theft is involved.

Still seeing something unexpected?

Send a concise report with the section name and relevant browser or network context.
